Trailer registrationsThere are 2 weight classes for trailers - 2,000 lbs. or less and more than 2,000 lbs. The weight includes the items being hauled. This weight class defines the registration fee as well as the expiration date of the registration. Only trailers over 3,000 lbs. have to be titled.
Trailers 2,000 lbs. or less Typically this is the single axle utility or boat trailer with 2 wheels. These registrations can expire in any month. Trailers more than 2,000 lbs.
These are all other trailers, including campers. Registrations for trailers other than campers will expire in February. Registration period
With the exception of camper trailers on which excise tax is due, trailers may be registered for one or two years.
New registration documentation
The paperwork required to register a trailer is similar to that of a motor vehicle.
- Purchased from a dealer - you need the "green" dealer certificate showing you paid your sales tax.
- Purchased from an individual - you need a bill of sale which includes the trailer's year, make, model, VIN number, seller's information, and the amount you paid for the trailer.
- If the trailer is rated for more than 3,000 lbs., you must have a title application or the previous title.
