Boat RegistrationsBoat registrations expire on December 31st.
To register a "new to you" boat, you must provide the following documentation: - Dealer sale (you purchased this at a dealer who collected sales tax) - you need to provide the "green" dealer certificate showing the make, model, year, & serial number of the boat. This is proof that you have paid your sales tax.
- Private sale - you must provide a bill of sale which lists the seller's name & address, the amount paid for the boat, as well as the make, model, year, & serial number of the boat.
If you purchase a new boat during the registration period and sell one which you had registered in the current registration period, you may transfer that registration. You will need to provide the registration to the boat which you sold and indicate to whom you transferred the boat.
To reregister a boat which was not registered in Milford last year, please provide a previous registration.
Boats may be registered at the Town Office during normal business hours. Because excise tax is due on boats, they may not be registered online through IF&W's website. Boats must be registered in the town of your legal residence - regardless of where the boat is housed - if you are a Maine resident. If you are not a resident of the State of Maine, your boat is registered in the town in which the boat is kept.
Beginning in 2008, IF&W combined the registration and milford stickers. Only one sticker is now required for freshwater boats.
