Budget informationAnnually, the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager, working with department heads, prepare a budget for the upcoming year. From this budget, the town meeting warrant articles for appropriations is prepared. Budget information is available in various levels of detail: - Budget overview - which shows the departmental totals & the changes from last year's budget.
- Budget detail by department & section. The town's chart of accounts is broken down into sections as prescribed by the State-wide Chart of Accounts. These sections (for expenditures) include:
- Salaries
- Benefits
- Supplies
- Professional & technical services
- Property services
- Other purchased services
- Legal obligations
- Property acquisition & improvements
- Reserve account funding.
- Departmental detail - this is detail by account number. Information is available for:
- General government - which includes Board of Selectmen, election, & town meeting costs, administrative expenses, code enforcement, planning, assessing, and finance department costs.
- Health & welfare - which includes the cost of the health officer & general assistance provided to our residents.
- Public safety - which includes the crossing guard, sheriff's department contract, fire department costs, hydrant rents, ambulance stipend to the City of Old Town, street lighting, animal control, & emergency management costs.
- Public works - which includes road maintenance, stormwater costs, septage disposal contract, and solid waste disposal costs.
- Culture & recreation - which includes the Old Town Library subsidy, parks maintenance & improvements, the summer rec program, & funding of recreational organizations.
- Legal obligations - which includes debt service & the county tax
- Other - which includes cemeteries & funding of public service organizations.
