New registrationsThere are 2 versions of new registrations.
NROP - this means "new registration, old plate" If you like your current license plate and don't want to have to remember a new number, you may use the license plate you've had in the past. Remember - the names won't change.New registration, new plates You can choose one of several plate styles. The "standard" chickadee plates are the least expensive at $ 35 per year. Speciality plates have an additional $ 20 initial fee ($ 15 additional fee on reregistration) - Conservation (monies go to Department of Conservation), Lobster (monies go to research), UMO & Black Bear (monies go to support the University of Maine system & scholarships), Agriculture (monies go to support agricultural activities), Support the Troops (monies go to Morale departments of National Guard and reserve units), Breast Cancer (monies go to research), and Sportsmen (monies go to Inland Fisheries & Wildlife - renewal fee remains at $ 20). Some specialty plates require additional documentation - Wabanaki (letter from tribe) & Veteran (DD 214). Some specialty plates require you to complete the registration at a Bureau of Motor Vehicle Branch office - initial or vanity plates & firefighter plates (get form from your fire chief).If your new vehicle was purchased from a dealer, you must bring: - proof of insurance
- current mileage information
- "Green" dealer's certificate - which shows you have paid your sales tax
- "Blue" title application - which shows you have applied for a title
- If your vehicle is "brand new", you must also provide us with the Maroney label or window sticker. This will list all the options on your vehicle as well as the manufacturer's suggested retail price.
If your new vehicle was purchased from an individual, you must bring:
- proof of insurance
- current mileage information
- the title from the "new" car - with the back section completed and signed by the seller. Titles are required for any vehicles less than 16 years old.
- a bill of sale showing the vehicle information as well as the amount which you paid.
